Locri — Castellesi
CASTELLESI COMUNE
Reggio Calabria, Calabria
A modern coastal comune whose nineteenth-century records belong to Gerace.
Locri — triptych-wide | Wikimedia Commons

Locri stands on the Ionian coast of the Locride, between the mouths of the Gerace and Novito torrents, and it is the administrative, cultural and religious centre of this stretch of shore. Its name belongs to one of the great cities of Magna Graecia, Locri Epizefiri , whose ruins lie a few kilometres south.

But the modern town is very young, and this is the single most important thing to know before searching for anything. It grew in the nineteenth century as a coastal village of Gerace ; it became an autonomous comune only in 1905 , under the name Gerace Marina ; and it took the name Locri only in 1934 . Civil registration began in 1809. For the first ninety-six years of it, there is no Locri .

The Patron
Santa Caterina d'Alessandria
Caterina d'Alessandria is Locri's patron, celebrated on 25 November. Her church stands in the modern coastal town.
The Name
Gerace Marina
The coastal settlement became an autonomous comune only in 1905, as Gerace Marina, and adopted the name Locri only in 1934. Earlier civil records belong under Gerace.
The Landmark
Locri Epizefiri
The Parco Archeologico di Locri Epizefiri preserves the ancient city whose name the modern comune adopted in 1934. Family records, however, follow the much later municipal history of Gerace, Gerace Marina and Locri.

Search Gerace, then Gerace Marina

For 1809–1905, the coastal population was registered under Gerace. From 1905–1934 the autonomous comune was Gerace Marina, and only afterward Locri. The archive trail therefore changes headings twice without the family necessarily moving at all.
LA PARLATA
How they speak

The local speech is Calabrian, Locride variety, with Greco-Calabro survivals in frazione names.

Before Locri, search Gerace

Locri Epizefiri was founded around 680 BC by Locrians from Greece, first at the promontory of Zephyrion north of Capo Spartivento, then — after a few years — some twenty kilometres further north on the hill of Epopis. The settlers kept the name Lokroi hoi Epizephyrioi , the Locrians under the west wind, to distinguish themselves from the Locrians of the homeland. The coast they took was the last stretch of southern Italy still available, and the people already there were, by the sources and by the excavations, a warlike population.

The city became one of the most consequential in the Greek west. The lawgiver Zaleucus is credited with producing the first written law code of the western world here — severe but just — and Plato called Locri the flower of Italy. Its terracotta workshops were among the finest anywhere: the pinakes , votive relief tablets, are the signature product, and a great deposit of them was recovered in Paolo Orsi's campaigns of 1908–09 , now at the museum of Syracuse, while the older Candida collection formed at Gerace went to Taranto.

It reached its height in the fifth and fourth centuries BC, sided with Syracuse against Rhegion, endured the tyranny of Dionysius II , received a Roman garrison in 282 BC , allied with Carthage and was stormed by Scipio . After that it declined. Reduced to a modest settlement, it was assaulted and destroyed by Saracen raiders around the seventh century AD, and its people abandoned the site.

Where they went is the point. They withdrew inland and uphill, to the safer height where Gerace rose. Between roughly the seventh century and the nineteenth, this coast was substantially empty — raiding and, later, malaria kept people off it. For more than a thousand years the population of this district lived in the hills, and the shore was a place you went to work, not to live.

The return began in the nineteenth century, and the decisive event was infrastructure: the building of the Ionian railway in the second half of the century. A coastal village of Gerace grew into a real town on the strength of it, acquired an economic and social identity distinct from the hill town above, and in 1905 was made an autonomous comune under the name Gerace Marina . By the early twentieth century the name no longer matched the reality: the inhabitants had begun to identify with their own town and with the classical past beneath it rather than with the comune they had separated from. In 1934 the name was changed to Locri .

The town is now the centre of the Locride, with the Museo Archeologico Nazionale and the archaeological park, the Ionic temple of Marasà — rebuilt in the first half of the fifth century BC over an archaic predecessor — and a Greek-Roman theatre. Its monuments include one to Nosside , the Locrian poetess, and one to the Five Martyrs of Gerace.

From the passenger index

At least 20 people who gave Locri as their home are recorded by name among Italian arrivals in the United States — each with the ship they sailed on and the day they landed.

A floor, not a total. The index covers arrivals through 1912, holds nothing between May 1907 and December 1911, and many passengers were written down with no home town at all. Where a name is there, it is there with its record.

Getting there

The nearest major airport is Lamezia Terme International Airport.

Locri is on the Ionian line about a hundred kilometres from Reggio Calabria, on flat coastal ground — the railway that made the town still runs through it.

Go first to the Museo Archeologico Nazionale and the archaeological park a few kilometres south: the Ionic temple of Marasà , the Greek-Roman theatre, the walls and necropoleis of a city Plato called the flower of Italy. Then, in the town, the Cattedrale di Santa Maria del Mastro , the church of Santa Caterina , and the nineteenth-century palaces along the streets that grew up with the railway.

But the essential trip for a descendant is inland and upward, to Gerace . It is a few kilometres away and a thousand years apart, and until 1905 it was where your family's records were kept and, for most of that time, where they lived. Standing in Gerace and looking down at the coastal plain is the clearest possible statement of what happened to this district between the Saracen raids and the railway.
