Rende — Castellesi
CASTELLESI COMUNE
Cosenza, Calabria
A modern university city hiding a much older hill town.
Rende — triptych-wide | Wikimedia Commons

Rende sits immediately north of Cosenza, and most of what you see there today was built in the last fifty years — the University of Calabria and the town that grew around it.

But the comune is old. The centro storico on its hill is medieval, and it is the Rende your family would have known. The modern valley town beneath it did not exist.

The Patron
Immacolata Concezione
The Immacolata Concezione is the listed patron, with 20 February as the feast date. No further explanation of that date is supplied.
The Place
The hill town
The valley districts visible today expanded largely after the university opened in the 1970s. An emigrant family came instead from the historic hill town or the farmland surrounding it.
The Landmark
Centro storico di Rende
The Centro storico di Rende contains the old churches, castle and streets of the ancestral town. For family research, those hill parishes matter far more than the recent valley neighbourhoods below.

MODERN RENDE IS NOT ANCESTRAL RENDE

Search the separate hill comune

Rende has always remained a separate comune from Cosenza, even though the modern urban areas now adjoin. Its older family geography is the hill town, while civil and district records follow the Cosenza side of the province's archive structure.
LA PARLATA
How they speak

Italian is standard. Local speech may include diverse Calabrian varieties, without naming one specific Rendese form.

The ancestral Rende is uphill

Rende's old town was fortified by the Normans in the eleventh century on a spur above the Crati valley, and the castle and the compact streets below it are the medieval settlement. It remained a small agricultural comune in the orbit of Cosenza for the following eight centuries, with silk and textile work among its trades in the early modern period, as across this part of Calabria.

What changed everything was the Università della Calabria , founded in 1972 and built on the plain below the old town. It became one of the largest campus universities in Italy, and the comune grew around it — new districts, new population, and a shift from an agricultural town of a few thousand to a city of tens of thousands.

The result is a comune of two entirely different parts: a medieval hill town, now quiet and partly restored, and a modern university city in the valley. They are the same administrative unit and nothing else.

From the passenger index

At least 964 people who gave Rende as their home are recorded by name among Italian arrivals in the United States — each with the ship they sailed on and the day they landed.

A floor, not a total. The index covers arrivals through 1912, holds nothing between May 1907 and December 1911, and many passengers were written down with no home town at all. Where a name is there, it is there with its record.

Getting there

The nearest major airport is Lamezia Terme International Airport.

A visitor arriving in Rende today lands in the valley — university buildings, shopping streets, modern housing. That is not the town your family left.

Go up to the centro storico. The medieval hill town is small, quiet, partly restored, and holds the castle, the old churches and the streets where a Rendese family actually lived. It has a good civic museum, and the views take in the Crati valley and the Sila beyond.

Cosenza and its handsome old town are ten minutes away, the Sila rises to the east, and the Tyrrhenian coast at Paola is half an hour west through the mountains.

What to see

The centro storico — the medieval hill town, and the Norman castle.

The Chiesa Matrice — and the old town's churches.

The civic museum — in the historic centre.

The Crati valley — the farmland the comune lived by.

Cosenza — ten minutes south, with the provincial archive.

Your family's parish — up the hill, not in the valley.
