Venice was an independent republic for a thousand years, and then, in the space of seventy, was ruled from Paris, from Vienna, and finally from Rome.
Every one of those changes altered who wrote down a birth. The result is that Venetian records are broken into periods with different keepers — and there is a fifty-five year stretch when no civil office was recording anything at all.
Every period uses a different keeper
Italian is standard. Local speech includes Venetian varieties in local speech and further describes Venetian as a distinct Romance language historically used in administration and daily life.
Venice was founded by mainlanders fleeing to the lagoon, and it turned that refuge into a maritime empire. The Republic of St Mark governed itself for over a thousand years through an elaborate machinery of councils and magistracies — the Maggior Consiglio, the Senate, the Council of Ten, the Avogaria di Comun — and it kept records with a thoroughness few states have matched. The Venetian state archive is one of the greatest in the world for that reason.
It ended abruptly. In 1797 Napoleon extinguished the Republic and handed Venice to Austria. The French returned in 1806 , bringing the Napoleonic administrative system — including civil registration. In 1815 Austria came back and kept the city until 1866 , when the Veneto was annexed to the Kingdom of Italy.
Those changes of ruler are why the records are periodised. Each regime made someone different responsible for writing down a birth, and the Austrian period gave that duty back to the Church.
The city itself declined through the nineteenth century — the port lost its function, the population fell, and many Venetians left the lagoon for the mainland or abroad. The Venice a descendant's family left was not the wealthy Republic of the paintings; it was a poor, damp, shrinking city.

EXPLORE VENETO →From the passenger index
At least 380 people who gave Venezia as their home are recorded by name among Italian arrivals in the United States — each with the ship they sailed on and the day they landed.
A floor, not a total. The index covers arrivals through 1912, holds nothing between May 1907 and December 1911, and many passengers were written down with no home town at all. Where a name is there, it is there with its record.

Venice is the most visited city in Italy and the easiest to see wrongly. A descendant has a way through that, which is to organise the visit around the sestiere and the parish rather than around San Marco.
Cannaregio and Castello are where most ordinary Venetians lived and where many still do. They are ten minutes from the crowds and feel like a different city. If your research has produced a parish, go to that church — in Venice, parish churches are on small squares in residential quarters, and they are still in use.
The islands matter too. Murano for glass, Burano for lace and fishing, Chioggia at the south of the lagoon, which is a working fishing town and not a tourist one. Families from these places are lagoon families, not city ones, and the distinction was real.
Your family's parish church — in Venice this is the record-keeping institution for most of the nineteenth century, and it is probably still standing.
Archivio di Stato , at the Frari — one of the greatest archives in Europe, holding the Republic's records and the 1806–1815 civil registers.
Archivio storico del Patriarcato — for the 1816–1871 parish records.
The sestieri away from San Marco — Cannaregio and Castello above all.
The Arsenale — the state shipyard, and the working heart of the Republic.
Murano, Burano and Chioggia — if your family came from the lagoon rather than the city.
Archives and registers
For 1816–1871 the parish priests were the civil registrars. There is no civil register to find.
