San Severo stands at the northern edge of the Tavoliere , the great wheat plain of Puglia, with the Gargano to the east and the Monti Dauni rising west.
It is the wine capital of northern Puglia — San Severo DOC was the region's first — and, like every comune of this province, its oldest civil records are held not at Foggia but at Lucera .
San Severo follows the Capitanata split
Italian is standard. Local speech may include Apulian varieties, with Salentino varieties further south.
San Severo grew on the tratturo — the great droving road along which Abruzzese and Molisan shepherds brought their flocks down to winter on the Tavoliere, a movement administered from Foggia by the Dogana delle Pecore and central to this province's economy for centuries.
The town prospered under the Kingdom as a market and administrative centre of the Capitanata , and at times contended with Foggia and Lucera for standing in the province.
On 30 July 1627 a severe earthquake struck the Capitanata and destroyed much of San Severo. The town was rebuilt through the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, and its churches — San Severino, the cathedral, San Giovanni Battista — belong to that reconstruction. The result is a substantially baroque town on a medieval plan.
From the nineteenth century wine became the defining industry: the plain around San Severo was planted extensively, and San Severo became the first DOC in Puglia . The town's cellars and the vine landscape around it are the working inheritance of that.

At least 549 people who gave San Severo as their home are recorded by name among Italian arrivals in the United States — each with the ship they sailed on and the day they landed.
A floor, not a total. The index covers arrivals through 1912, holds nothing between May 1907 and December 1911, and many passengers were written down with no home town at all. Where a name is there, it is there with its record.

San Severo is a substantial working town with a handsome baroque centre and very few visitors. The churches rebuilt after the 1627 earthquake are its architecture, and the vineyards its landscape.
For a descendant the timing question is easy: come in May , for the Festa del Soccorso . The batterie are extraordinary and they are the town at its most itself.
Foggia a little further, and the Gargano and Monti Dauni lie on either side of the plain.

Archives and registers
San Severo's 1809–1865 registers are at Lucera, like every other comune in Capitanata.
